Kirkham Hot Springs

Updated: Jan 2

To me, Kirkham is one of the most beautiful and accessible hot springs in Idaho.

What

Geothermal hot springs just under 2 hours from Boise, Idaho. There are around 9 hot springs in the area give or take depending on how high the river next to it is running. There is a $5 fee to be left at the gate so bring cash.

Best time to go

To me, this is as important as getting there because if when you get there, there are a million people, it just is not as enjoyable.

Since this is an easily accessible spring less than 2 hours from Boise, this thang gets BUSY quick. I highly recommend you go on a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday and aim to arrive to the parking lot just before sunrise. Make sure your check at LEAST the day before so you can wake up and prepare to leave on time.

Also, I highly recommend to go in the spring or fall when it's still pretty chilly. When it is too hot outside in tempurature, you will feel too hot in the 104 degree hot springs and probablly not enjoy them as much

How to get there

This is the Google Maps link to the Kirkham parking lot which is different than where Google Maps will place you if you google it.

The gate is closed at the bridge but it is such a quick walk. There are some steaming springs you'll notice along the walk against the mountain. I recommend to take a look but walk to the springs at the second "x" on the image, next to the river.

Enjoying Kirkham

Once you walk down to where you see the river and the hot springs waterfall in the picture, look for a dry place to get undressed and leave your things. Theft is very rare. Keep any important items in your car or on you.

You'll see the hot spring waterfall first. Enjoy it. It is incredible. Then scramble over the rocks ahead of you to the next springs and go exploring. There are 6 or so springs straight ahead of you as well as closer to the river. You get to look and feel out which one is the temperature and depth for you.

There is also a spring on the hill overlooking the river and across the river from the waterfall just under the highway.

What to wear/ bring

You can wear what is comfortable for you to hike in and out. If it's cold cold, I recommend dressing for it. Layer up.

For the hot springs, wear whatever type of bathing suit is comfortable for you. Clothing optional is also a thing for natural hot springs if it moves you. I HIGHLY recommend a watershoe or a sandal that straps to your feet ( so you're not sliding all over) WITH TREAD. Tread and attached to your feet are wildly important for your safety. The rocks near the waterfall can be slippery and walking over/through the each rocky bottom springs can be rough of the bottom of your feet.

Bring a microfiber towel. They are lightweight and dry you off quicker than cotton.

Wrapping up, this is for you. If you need clarity on this post, don't hesitate to connect and ask. Email holler@theunpopularblack.com anytime with your questions.
